Re: A few deep breaths *SP*

In Response To: Re: A few deep breaths *SP* (Louis Wu)

:... - I think that's because it's really hard to pin down what's
:wrong. It's not any one thing - it's a feeling.

I once saw/heard Stephen King talking about what makes something scary. It wasn't the writter, but instead the imagination. He commented that the imagination was capable of some very "grusome" things and its true. Example: Jaws wasn't scary becasue you could see the shark.

What does this have to do with Halo 2 and this "feeling"? The feeling I think is the remains of our imagination not being fullfilled by reality. It never could have been fullfilled as that is not the way things work. The opposite is only true where reality can only be fulfilled by our imagination. Its a paradox and a rule that the hype of Halo 2 did not follow.

Fundamentally all the hype took place in our minds. Information on halo 2 was limited. Bungie only gave us little tid bits and our imaginations ran with it. The problem occurs in reality where the requirements of our imagination can never be fulfilled. Reality is limited by such things as time, money, pain, etc. The only thing that can take place successfully is the opposite where the imagination fulfills the requirements of reality. This is exactly where Halo CE differed from Halo 2. HaloCE came first supplying only vague information and leaving behind only questions not answers. Our imagination then tried to fill in the holes thus, a popular game was born.

This is how we as humans like things to work. It creates tension and excitement outside of reality and let's face it, reality sucks. We live day to day not facing the facts of life so as to make life easier. It's the Victorian way. Not trying to get too lofty here : ), but we escape into video games or alternate realities as one way to accomplish this. It is the modivating factor for making games. One of the most popular things to do during the Great Depression was to see a movie, yet people had very little money.

So here is where my thesis is restated and I draw it all to a conclusion: HaloCE, the actual game first exsisted in reality and became popular in our imaginations. On the other hand, Halo 2 first exsisted in our imaginations and then secondly in reality. This is not the formula for success as we desire to be delivered away from reality, not to it. This is where Halo 2 went wrong. Overall it is a good game, but it forced us to face reality as it worked backwards through the formula. This problem has left us with this "feeling", the "feeling" you have about your own true reality. I hope that this does not make everyone angery, but instead allows them to see the beauty in experiencing something that they don't usually experience.

One more thing: People who currently are focused on criticising or pointing out ONLY certain technicalities and not this overall major effect of the hype are only still in denial. Reality is, simply a hard thing to deal with.
