I don't know if it's always performed the same, but in the first tests people were like "what the f*** is this thing???" probably before they even tried it. I think the grahpics were screwed up on it then too, so it was harder to tell what it was supposed to be. It might have not done as much damage as now either and/or had more limited range (LOTS of things have changed from first test to later test versions to demo to the full game) Watch some teamplay demos in q3, and you'll be pretty damn shocked how much people SWITCH TO the gauntlet--and how many kills they actually get with it. I don't think I've seen a single q3 team demo where the person recording or being followed (if it follows just one person) didn't get at least 2 or 3 gauntlet kills (this is out of like 20 demos of the best clans, such as 9, nb, dr, ck, k9, abuse, xbn, etc.)
