(Nijhazer) I think he just means that 3D engines of today consist of being able to take a large number (pretty much arbitrary number, depending on CPU speed and memory) of polygons, apply high-quality textures (24-bit textures of sizes ranging up to 1000x1000 pixels, or even more, especially if texture compression is used), with very nice lightmaps and some dynamic lighting capabilities, and nowadays increasingly added things like dynamic (sometimes fractal) animated textures, specular highlighting, bump mapping, complex sky boxes, etc., and also increasinly skeletal/segmented/parametric animation and advance physics modelling, etc. Not all engines would be able to do something incredibly complex at reasonable speed on your average current hardware, but it's not like they have the sort of fundamental limitations that Doom or Marathon had. In other words, in a lot of ways current engines are getting more similar, and also reaching the end of the road in terms of needing to support fundamentally different geometry, for instance--they just need CPUs to catch up to be able to be used to their maximum potentials, or very high-quality textures. > What exactly does he mean by his comment that any reasonably > competent 3D engine can render that?
