How did I first hear of Bungie? Well, I was aware of Wolfenstein 3D on the PC, then at a MacWorld Boston I caught a glimpse of Pathways into Darkness. Enginewise it was a Wolfenstein 3D clone. But I played a good ways through it when it did come out on my old LC. Then later, a half year or so after Doom was out on the PC... here comes Marathon for the Mac. An engine with very similar capabilities and limits as the Doom engine. These were and are wonderful games. With game play features and stories that expanded on what you could do with a game. I'm very glad that Bungie didn't keep up with this trend but instead went into a fairly new and distinct direction with the Myth series. A game you couldn't so easilly pass off as a clone of game X. As to Carmack's other comment in terms of what he's seen. He probably has not seen all the videos we have. In addition he may be referring to the general class of Terrain engines. No, Quake cannot do Halo... wholly different approaches to rendering, but that doesn't imply a decent flight simulator couldn't do Halo terrain like we've seen. We've also not seen the extent of interiors that are capable either, a place where Quake and some other engines strengths lie. And certainly, Halo looks very pretty right now, but is fairly unjudgeable in the play department. His own point of view might also be a bit narrower, just compare the multiplayer modes of Q3A, UT and Marathon.
