Well, I think that they really want to be the dominant species in the galaxy (or universe), but they don't want to show people there power, which is pushing a button and everything dies, I think they want to prove that if they didn't have that big weapon (maybe they haven't invented a nuclear type weapon [or something else of that magnitude]) that they could wipe us of the face of the universe with pure man (alien?) power. This would be more 'honorable' than just bombing us and maybe that's how they work (like Japanese work with suicide when they fail).
