Even with FTL technology it seems to take good chuncks of time to move ships between the stars-- the only forces the covenant have available at the time are those that survived both the huge battle and the following engagement with the Pillar of Autumn. Perhaps their "overwhelming forces" are already on the way to the HALO- you just have to beat them before this back up fleet arrives (kinda like Crusader, if anyone remembers THAT game :) )

The majority of the posts in this thread seem to me to be about why the Covenant are not acting rationally in their campaign against humanity... The way i, for one, see the Covenant gives me a clear answer to these questions: The Covenant are not Rational. They don't think like we would expect them to.
They are totally crazed psychopaths- Its my belief that they threw Everything into this attack... They have no reserves, no backup, no intelligence operations- they don't want to learn about us, be corrupted by us, or understand us in the slightest bit- they want us dead, ALL of us. They simply don't care about Earth- to them it is just another colony to be razed- it is we who see them drawing nigh as they methodically destroy everything between earth and their space.
How can they be expected to resist chasing the PoA when it escapes? Not only did it win several engagements (perhaps) but it ESCAPED... nothing escapes the flight of their arrow- nothing :)

Why didn't they bomb the world? In my view there are two reasons- First is that not only did this ships crew survive the initial battle- the PoA then does major damage to the Cov fleet at HALO-- and still manages to escape to the surface... bombing colonists is one thing- but these obviously elite terran warriors? Perhaps the Covs, zealots that they are, want to show their faces, show their hated enemies what THEY are like in a battle...
Second, the Covs did steal all of their technology from ancients- perhaps in doing so they came to worship these forgotten ones... how could they risk damaging yet another source of tech (or shrine)?

The biggest question, and the one that probably holds the answers to the rest, is: Why are we the Covenant's Devils??
As Cortana said- they knew about us before we had met, how long before is unkown, and they imeadiatly hated us- why??
Perhaps it is the creation of AIs, but only Bungie knows for sure.. :)
