That's a very nice point you've brought up. Simply not knowing that anyone survived... and depending how well humans managed to lay low, it might be a bit before the Covenant realizes the differences between one of their patrols being lost to a small group of marines instead of being lost to whatever defenses the structures on the Halo might inately have.
