In Response To: Pondering......... (Sempiternity) You're right there mate. The Covenants are not human therefore they are unlikely to be rational by our standards. Rational is a term useful only when comparing members of the same species, sometimes only the same society of that species. The Covenants are probably perfectly rational - by their standards - we cannot judge them accurately unless we can relate to them on friendly terms. As to nuking the surface of the halo. That would be an incredibly stupid thing to do if you want to use it. Nuclear weapons cause enough damage to a planet let alone an artificial ring structure. They may not do any damage to it, considering the strength it would have to be to spin at a speed where it could maintain a centripetal acceleration close to 1g (remember the ringworld structural material had a tensile strength somewhere near that of atomic nuclei and it was 10 million km in diameter), but they would almost definitely push it out of its nice comfortable orbit thereby causing its destruction in a few years or so (phew what a sentence). The Covs might not be able to find what they expect to in this short a time, they may want to keep the ring after that anyway or they may have one of the reasons stated in earlier messages in this thread. Whatever their reason it would be a very bad idea to nuke the surface of the ring. So as you can see I fully support the idea that the Covs have every reason not to nuke the ring and are not rational by our standards. |
