If there are 500 planets with 5 million citizens each, you have a total population of 2,500,000,000. That's two point five trillion, for those of you who do not like counting zeroes(the numbers for my equation are estimates: earlier in the thread, someone suggested that the number of human-controlled worlds rested in the "upper hundreds," and your statement that the populations sit in the millions). Given the prolific nature of the human race, I feel that it is safe to assume that there would be quite a few planets with populations numbering in the billions (by no means balanced by those with smaller populations). If the human population were two trillion large, and if it had access to five hundred worlds, the UNSC fleet would number in the hundreds of thousands of ships. There would be millions of Marines. Given the fact that the UNSC was nearly on the point of collapse at the beginning of the war with the Covenant, and the fact that someone thought that seventy-five specially trained and augmented soldiers could keep the entire empire in check, I can't believe that we had, at any point in the Halo timeline from present to 2553, that many populated planets. Of course, I once calculated, based on information from the battle at Reach, that it would take something like a hundred thousand ships to have a chance of successfully assaulting the Earth, guarded by its three hundred MAC platforms, so I could easily be wrong. I still feel that "hundreds" is too generous; perhaps a hundred worlds.
