In Response To: 800 FTW (Devrous) Part 1: Distances and Slipspace Speed Harvest Planet: Harvest
Notes: If this is the furthest colony from Earth, we can assume that all other human settlements are within this distance from Earth. Also, it is unclear whether or not the Epsilon Indi mentioned in Contact Harvest is the real life star, a fictional location for the star, or just the wrong name put onto another star. Reach Planet: Reach
Notes: Reach, the UNSC powerbase amongst the stars. Reach and Harvest Distance between: 14.09 ly / 117 ly (Halopedia page)
Reach and Earth Distance between: 10.50 ly
*From First Strike: The Covenant began glassing Reach on August 30, 2552. Lieutenant Wagner flew a Prowler from Reach to Earth and was on Earth for debreifing on September 4, 2552. Slipstream Travel It has been said on multiple occasions that slipspace travel is not an exact science. But just how fast is it? If Lt. Wagner made a straight shot to Earth from Reach, he travelled 10.5 ly in about 96 hours. 10.5 ly / 96 hrs = 0.109375 ly/hr (light years per hour)
So, let's use this number to see how it holds up for Reach to Harvest. 117 ly / 2.625 ly/day = 44.57 days = ~1 month 14 days Hmmm...not 2+ months. Let's go backwards to figure a new speed. Assume that it takes 65 days to get from Reach to Harvest. 117 ly / 65 days = 1.8 ly/day = 0.075 ly/hr Now Reach to Earth with this number... 10.5 ly / ?? hrs = 0.075 ly/hr This will give us 140 hours. There is a big difference between 140 hours and 96-ish hours. Assumptions Perhaps the difference is due to the ship used. The Prowler is obviously a faster craft than most UNSC ships. Another reason may be the "weather" within the slipstream creating anomolous flows of time, and these would increase over a longer trip. A simple answer would be to blame the authors for not doing the math in order to keep consistency, but once again I'd point out the "slipperiness of slipstream space" is still a vital crutch thrown in by the Bungie team to ensure that there need not be a set speed. This flexability, while annoyingly inprecise, is a wise tool as far as canon goes. Part 2: Boundary of the UNSC Furthest UNSC planet from Earth is Harvest, 117 ly away. This leads us to assume that everything within that distance from Earth has been explored and is 'claimed' by the UNSC. The ZD Problem Star System: Zeta Doradus
Zeta Doradus has two problems in my mind. 1) ZD is said to be on the edge of UNSC-controlled space (GoO). I can only justify this statement if either Harvest is really just 11.38 ly away (which would mess up a lot of canon) or the statement needs interpretation: the edge of (currently, as of 2552) UNSC-controlled space. 2) The UNSC cruiser Pillar of Autumn was refit to serve near Zeta Doradus in 2550 (FoR) I think this is just a plain, flat-out mistake in Fall of Reach. The Covenant hadn't found Onyx, so there was no conflict there. A ****load of space Ok, so if we assume that the UNSC has colonized as far away as 117 ly, is it reasonable to assume that they've visited all the stars within this range? At first I would say yes, but then I discovered that it is estimated that there are ~14,600 stars within 100 light years of Earth!!! THAT is a LOT of stars! And for this very reason, I think the idea that there could be 800 human settlements (not full-fledged colonies, mind you) is VERY reasonable. So that is my cudgel of a two-cents rant. Enjoy picking it apart if you wish and adding your own speculation. If anyone wants further reading, here are some more sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestia
