If you're gonna go Marathon nutty about the Halo story, you were on the right track with the hero by a thousand names bit, but you forgot the end to Marthon Infinity's single player campaign when Durandal is narrating to the player before the universe collapses: "You are Destiny."
Pretty amazing that the one thing in the universe that could bend space and time just happened to activate at just the right moment to cause the Master Chief to miraculously survive escaping from the Covenant fleet at Alpha Halo and suddenly show up a few days/weeks prior to that event to save the remainder of his precious "Blue Team" as described in Ghosts of Oynx, isn't it? After all, Cortana herself notes of the Chief: "I should have never told you to be careful. You're incapable of that. I should have wished you victory. That's what you're good at, John. Winning."
