Instead of a linear series of events, time is a sea of loops all entertwined, thus allowing the evil D to slip from the beginning of one to the end of one. He must have figured this out being the evil super AI he now is. The thing is, now hes stuck until he can escape. He stacked the odds so that he could be reincarnated as the flood, which gave him a high probability of surviving, but now he needs to advance to the point of escape once more, so that he can travel between dimensions and through time. So he can be the ruler of all time and space. The forerunner were analyzing this when they realized what was going on and attempted to stop it with the halos. Of course it failed, and now we are stuck in a battle to stop this AI from taking over everything. OR, the forerunner were trying to escape this universe, and the halos are a device that can allow them to escape, but it went horribly wrong and wiped out sentient life instead of ending the universe. This would mean that the halos arent what we think they are. Now as for the ark, it would be a backup plan for humanity (the forerunner) to live despite a failed universe escape. A vessel for humanity to survive the halos. That would mean that we are doomed to activate the halos again if we want to stop durnandal from taking over. The forerunner line of thinking must have been to beat Durandal to the punch, because no normal means could stop him. This sounds a lot better to me, considering the "starve the flood", mentality from a super race always sounded silly. Sorry about the spelling btw, i wasnt paying much attention to that, this is all really on a whim.
