In Response To: Damn, Sept. (Shishka) : Who are you, myself, or anyone to say, then, that Bungie is going to
I belive JRR Tolkien once commented on the prospect of writing more novels in the Lord of the Rings universe. His reply, was: "I am doubtful myself about the undertaking. Part of the attraction of the L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist. To go there is to destroy the magic, unless new unattainable vistas are again revealed." This I think is the risk one runs when they expand the universe. Granted, most of the time I think Bungie has given us "new unatainable vistas". The books raised more questions than they answered, and certainly each Halo game brings something new to the table. This I belive is the risk that someone who would argue the point of view you express is pointing out. It's possible to show everything and visit everywhere so no "magic" is left to put it in Tolkien's terms. Marathon and Myth, all had a lore surrounding them where we the player could not go and could not see, and only had to imagine. Imagination is a great way to connect to a story. It would almost certainly ruin things in my mind if say, Bungie were to put faces and images to the events that I have already created myself in my own head. Halo began with its own "unataiable vistas". In a sense, the graphic novel took us to a few of those. In my opinion, the graphic novel killed a bit of the magic. Sarge's escape was best left for me to formulate, especially when it turned out to be pretty boring in actuality. I myself am quite eager to see what comes out of all of this, and do not expect all the magic to be lost. |
