In Response To: Damn, Sept. (Shishka)

[snip]

: MarineCorps117's fears (and indeed, the fears of many of you) tend to be
: rooted mainly in assumptions and generalizations. For example: "All
: video game movies suck."

: Sure. But why? Actually look at what made a movie bad, and compare what went
: wrong to what's being done for the Halo movie.

: The irony here is that you can't, actually, because we're being quiet about
: the movie right now.

I pretty much agree with everything you said up top, but I'm inspired to ask, since you've chosen to phrase your answer this way:

So the Halo movie could suck, and we wouldn't know yet because you're not telling us?

Until something is said, it's impossible to say one way or another whether Halo is falling or will fall prey to the same problems that made previous video game film adaptations bad-- regardless of what you, I, or anyone else thinks those things are.

: Your issues about the Graphic Novel are really your own opinion, and you are
: welcome to them. I should point out that things settled upon as "hard
: fact" by the fanbase are usually determined as such by the fanbase
: with no prompting by Bungie. An obvious example of this are the number of
: people that have concluded that the Drinol and the Sharquoi are the same
: thing, simply because they haven't seen them mentioned anywhere other than
: in Halo 2 related discussion.

People really think that? Good grief.

[snip]

: As for the Elites in Infinite Succor, I'd think that someone so hung up on
: Halo canon would be aware that Elites have spoken in such a manner since
: the very beginning. They've always been religious zealots in character.
: Just because you only heard them say "wort wort wort" in Halo 1
: doesn't mean they weren't calling you a demon.

Just worth mentioning here: Unless one was a motivated fan who read fansites and read the manual cover to cover and frequented the forum and read the novels, it is entirely possible to play through all of Halo 1, and be paying attention, and not know this about the Covenant.

If you know that in advance, then a lot of things make more sense than otherwise. But I can see where some people who didn't get this information through other channels were blindsided when Halo 2 came around and all of a sudden we could understand Elites and we got a full and complete exposure to their religious culture.

I think that's just a natural consequence of the way the story unfolds, but I can see people being surprised by it.

Not that it justifies the rest of the original whine, of course.
