In Response To: Re: Damn, Sept. (Narcogen)

: [snip]

: I pretty much agree with everything you said up top, but I'm inspired to ask,
: since you've chosen to phrase your answer this way: So the Halo movie
: could suck, and we wouldn't know yet because you're not telling us?

That's one way of looking at it. My point was, regardless of whether it is going to break the chain of bad video game movies, or reveal that said chain could never be broken, right now you guys have no idea. As such? The only thing you'll get by worrying about it is wrinkles.

: Just worth mentioning here: Unless one was a motivated fan who read fansites
: and read the manual cover to cover and frequented the forum and read the
: novels, it is entirely possible to play through all of Halo 1, and be
: paying attention, and not know this about the Covenant.

: If you know that in advance, then a lot of things make more sense than
: otherwise. But I can see where some people who didn't get this information
: through other channels were blindsided when Halo 2 came around and all of
: a sudden we could understand Elites and we got a full and complete
: exposure to their religious culture.

: I think that's just a natural consequence of the way the story unfolds, but I
: can see people being surprised by it.

Sure. That particular comment was directed at the guy that started the thread.

Speaking of, since there was a brief debate about use of the word "men," I'd like to point out that one of the reasons I am not very big on fan fiction is because fanfic authors tend to try too hard to sound authentic. Essentially, they're trying so hard to make like they're accomplished authors with expertise in the Halo universe that they tend to write only for themselves, or rather, only for people that read Halo fanfiction. It'd be like Blizzard releasing a Warcraft Novel where they describe how powerful Shishka, Dark Warlock of The Burning Legion and Keeper of the Pants of Shadow is by calling him "Level 60."

Put yourself in the situation. You're surrounded by monsters you've never seen before. Your team is falling dead left and right-- and then getting back up again as new enemies. Time is short and that damn Legate is being a pissant. Chances are you're not going to take a moment to pick honorifics out of a hat. You're going to go with the shortest word that comes to mind because you don't have time for formal crap.

I discussed this here before, I think. Science Fiction often falls prey to devices that make it difficult to relate to the characters or story therein. Fanfiction is especially guilty of this, though I tend to think that authors are in general unaware of it. Why use "men" instead of some other word? Because it's quick, clean, and just as effective as any other word you could use. The longer you draw out the sentence by using more "appropriate" words, the more you take away the urgency Spec-Ops Commander is feeling, and the more the reader loses grasp of that same urgency. Sure, elites aren't human, so perhaps the male of the species cannot be called "men," but you won't see a human drill sergeant making exceptions because there's women in bootcamp. The word is not the point.
