If they were looking for weapons and therefore took down crates then that makes sense. But if they were attempting to capture flood, then that's a whole new ballgame in terms of how the Covies translate the Forerunner ruins.

Somehow if the Covies knew how dangerous the flood is, would they still try and retrieve samples? Why? Glassing planets seems to do the trick. Unless the flood hold some other secret and they are of other usage.
