In Response To: Re: whining about Del Rio (Bry) Some of these are very good points that should have been addressed in game. I haven't played Sp Ops yet, but there is little to no mention in the campaign of the fact that Infinity was caught because they detected Cortana's signal. Things would have made a lot more sense if that had been mentioned when the Chief meets up with the Infinity. In fact, a five minute debriefing about where he's been for four years would have made a whole lot of sense, but instead it's just,"Oh you're back? Then save my ship a couple times while I yell at you." Also, I think the behavior I was referring to also takes place before Cortana's breakdown, but I'm having trouble remembering specifics right now. He just says stuff that doesn't quite make sense if you think about it for like 5 seconds. I'm not saying that there may not be reasons for his disposition, but since no attempt is made to show those reasons, I can't identify with his reactions at all. If they had spent more time on that, I might have enjoyed learning about his character, but instead they just made him consistently unpleasant. And that seems unnecessary to me. In game terms, even if it's realistic, it's not much fun to be surrounded by jerks. What's my motivation to help these people? It might be more excusable if there were more counterpoint, but the only characters in the game who aren't jerks are just fairly boring. If I have no interest in the characters they created, then interrupting my gameplay to make me talk to those characters is like forcing me to eat a bowl of crap if I want to ride the ferris wheel. Personally, I think this attempt to be more dramatic and 'filmy' is misguided, but I can appreciate what they're trying to do. But if that's the case, I'm so far not impressed with the cast they've introduced. : Try putting yourself in his shoes. : His ship has just been pulled inside a hollow planet and is trapped. : Here's a big one: the reason the ship was put into a position that allowed it
: It was knocked to the ground and damaged, whereupon it came under mass attack
: He knows his ship is damaged and vulnerable, and it's the pride of the UNSC.
: He knows Cortana has exceeded her lifespan, but let's note that he doesn't
: The Master Chief might be a hero, but he's also been MIA for 5 years. Del Rio
: He's actually quite reasonable to start with, about saying they have to
: Then Cortana has her little rampancy fit, sending a surge throughout the
: That was a tipping point. Only then does he order her decommissioned. Why
: Then John refuses the firm, but not rabid, order to give him Cortana's chip. : Only now do things really tip over and starts screaming. : Let's remember again that he probably blames the two of them for getting his
: Then his own crew starts hesitating to carry out his orders, which just
: In short, I think there are quite a few reasons why he acts the way he does.
: It's not good form that he flips like that, absolutely not...
