Re: whining about Del Rio

In Response To: Re: whining about Del Rio (Bry)

I agree about Miranda, she had some terrible lines, especially in Halo 3.

It wasn't the fact that he did things by the book that made him not work for me. It wasn't even the orders he gave, but how he delivered them. Many of the things he says are unreasonable. I don't want to get into too many specifics, but let me see if I can give a counter-example. The issue is about motivation to me. Del Rio comes across as more than a jerk, he comes across as harboring a grudge or even hatred of the Master Chief. Absolutely every one of his lines addressed to the MC is unjustifiably vehement, IMO. They could have produced conflict from his insistence of doing things by the book without him coming across as having a mysterious chip on his shoulder.

Okay, another example, just to try and prove that I'm not only hating on Halo 4. The writing in previous games is, in a lot of ways, just as lazy as the writing in Halo 4. Sgt. Johnson is not a particularly well-rounded character. However, in his case, it doesn't really matter, because his character is drawn straight out of pop culture. We all know who he is supposed to be from his very first speech in Halo 1. In the 3rd game, there's a meager attempt to add something to that, but fortunately it doesn't really disrupt who he is. He's just the badass officer from Full Metal Jacket and Aliens. His motivations aren't a mystery, and he fits right into his position.

IMO, there's no natural fit for Del Rio. Why the hell does he act the way he does? It's a complete mystery to me. 343 wants to bring in conflict, but I can't see anything behind it that drives the conflict, so it's just obnoxious and distracting when I'm trying to play a game. Laskey (spelling?) is a relatively likeable character, but suffers from the same problem. 343 tries to bring in depth, but does it at exactly the wrong moment. We finally hear something about Laskey's backstory right at the end of the game, when I'm busy mourning a character that has been around for 3 games. My only thought at that moment was, "Why should i care about your exposition?" Same with Del Rio, I mostly felt that my time was being wasted any time he was onscreen because I didn't care about him.

: Why should every character be likeable though?
: That's not exactly believable. I wouldn't even say everyone who posts on HBO
: is completely likeable either.
: You could actually say there was a distinct lack of unlike-able characters
: in the original trilogy (it's the same series. Though that said, there are
: characters I found generally unlike-able back then such as both of the
: Keyes'. Miranda is responsible for some of the most silly moments in Halo
: 2 and 3)

: While it may have been the intention that Del Rio come across as
: 'incompetent', I didn't believe that to really be the case at all. He
: simply did things by the book and didn't put his crew and ship in
: unnecessary danger. He followed the rules. The standard operating
: procedures and protocols..
: That is not automatically a bad thing and, under the circumstances, was
: really quite justified.

: What is becoming an unfortunate trope is the concept that anyone in the
: military that isn't constantly spoiling for a fight is, by definition, a
: coward or incompetent.

: I'm reminded of an incident over Iraq about 8 years ago involving a USMC
: Forward Air Controller and a Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet
: pilot.
: The pilot was instructed to engage a ground target but due to bad weather, he
: was unable to satisfy his own Rules of Engagement that the target must be
: visually identified.
: This let to an argument that culminated with the Aussie being called
: "Chickenshit" simply for following his ROE.

: It was also a combination of disregarding ROE and orders combined with the
: 'mission fulfilment' phenomenon which led to the USS Vincennes shooting
: down Iran Air Flight 655.

: It can lead to so many bad things, but we're heading into some rather deeply
: personal matters for myself, so I'll stop right there.
