whining about Del Rio | |

It seems to me that Halo 4 is the first time in the history of the franchise that there has ever been a character that I would describe as sniveling. Del Rio comes across like an incompetent, spoiled brat. It is an unfortunately common trope in movie writing to have a superior officer as a sort of pseudo-antagonist, but it's strange to see that brought into a Halo game. Every other good guy in the series is usually characterized as admirable and intelligent, even in failure. Keyes Sr. and Jr., Sgt. Johnson, the ODSTs, the Spartans in Reach, even random marines throughout the series, all seem helpful and happy to be doing what they're doing, even when it involves certain death. Even the villains were usually characters that demanded some degree of respect, if only because of how evil they were. I would say the closest thing I can think of to a Del Rio-like 'hindrance' character was Tartarus in Halo 2, but at least he wasn't whiny, and his position was justified because he had very different aims from the Arbiter even when they were on the same side. It seems quite possible that Del Rio's actions could have been justified by him in a much less annoying way, especially considering that he was responsible for the lives of the people on Infinity, and I'm not sure what was gained by writing him the way they did. Really, there is a pretty disappointing lack of likeable characters compared to the original series. This could be partly due to the original series' sense of humor and bravado fading in favor of more melodrama. I don't want to sound too much like an old man reminiscing about better times, but this seems like something they should try to remedy in the next title.
