Why should every character be likeable though? That's not exactly believable. I wouldn't even say everyone who posts on HBO is completely likeable either. You could actually say there was a distinct lack of unlike-able characters in the original trilogy (it's the same series. Though that said, there are characters I found generally unlike-able back then such as both of the Keyes'. Miranda is responsible for some of the most silly moments in Halo 2 and 3) While it may have been the intention that Del Rio come across as 'incompetent', I didn't believe that to really be the case at all. He simply did things by the book and didn't put his crew and ship in unnecessary danger. He followed the rules. The standard operating procedures and protocols.. That is not automatically a bad thing and, under the circumstances, was really quite justified. What is becoming an unfortunate trope is the concept that anyone in the military that isn't constantly spoiling for a fight is, by definition, a coward or incompetent. I'm reminded of an incident over Iraq about 8 years ago involving a USMC Forward Air Controller and a Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet pilot. The pilot was instructed to engage a ground target but due to bad weather, he was unable to satisfy his own Rules of Engagement that the target must be visually identified. This let to an argument that culminated with the Aussie being called "Chickenshit" simply for following his ROE. It was also a combination of disregarding ROE and orders combined with the 'mission fulfilment' phenomenon which led to the USS Vincennes shooting down Iran Air Flight 655. It can lead to so many bad things, but we're heading into some rather deeply personal matters for myself, so I'll stop right there.
