I wanted to do another one because I wasn't too crazy about the native Forerunner I did. Plus Quirel's armless/legless pilot inspired me to do something a bit more fun. It was hard coming up with ideas for any kind of logical Forerunner mutation, and my quick thumbnail sketches ranged from floating body parts to massive hulks. The idea of just a floating head intrigued me, but I didn't really know how and what purpose that would serve. So I decided to look through random Forerunner images until I stopped on an image of Epitaph. Why not do a religious figure? The Mantle is a huge part of the Forerunner culture, and it makes sense to have some kind of priest. He's got a bit of a Mouth of Sauron-look with just his mouth peaking out. I guess the idea behind that was to take the identity out of the orator, draw more focus to the mouth, and there's this idea I came up with that it helps them meditate. The Orators of the Mantle would fulfill the role of religious leaders and consultants. So when a debate about what goes against the Mantle happens in the Council, then the Orators will step in and make a final judgement. Again, I haven't read Cryptum or Primordium, so I don't know if they covered this role in the books or not.
