Here's an article about how working in constraints produces creativity. With seemingly free reign over a problem, we force ourselves into going with something that's safe and works. Like I said though, different approaches work for different people. An example in this thread: Quirel came up with this awesome concept of a Forerunner pilot, and the best I could come up with is basically a Na'vi. I actually do want to make another drawing though. Quirel got me thinking about the abstract. I'd try to go with both approaches for future rounds of VHU. However, you should be a little bit more lenient on the strict canon approach, since that does seem to be something that's tying a lot of people up.
