In Response To: Visualizing the Halo Universe Round 5 Summary (Postmortem) : What am I doing wrong? : Please let me know. First off, I agree what with the other's said, especially what Prior said about the Rules and Restrictions. Second, keep in mind that not everyone has interest in 'everything Halo': some people may only care about certain parts of it. I, myself, an example of this with my near obsession with Sangheili (and couldn't give a damn about just about anything else). Third, individual skills. Some people are more writers than artists, or are only 'good' at certain subjects. Again, using myself as an example, I can't draw human-like characters worth a damn and 343s depiction of Forerunners went too close into that 'human-like' terroratory for me to even want to try. Same in inanimate objects in general (though I have a better chance if I use a 3d program like Blender or Sculptris). This all leds up to the intimidation factor. If people feel intimidated, they likley won't even try. My advice, loosen up a bit, relax the rules and restrictions. Remember that when it comes to things not known well visually (if there is even a visual example at all) or if there are conflicting visual examples (like with the Sangheili), everyone will make up their own interpetation of it. Don't stifle creativity with a 'it MUST follow canon' rule: in the case of the conflicting visual examples, people will ask 'which one is canon?' (remember that has been little actual visual consistancy on many things over the course of the Halo series, unlike other series like Mass Effect, at least in terms of species design) A more relaxed 'be mindful of canon' would be better: it would allow for more creative freedom. A bit (or a lot) of artistic license won't hurt...cause, after all, 343/Bungie certainly stick with one design! In closing, the title of your 'contest' always screamed to me that you were asking for 'my' vision of the haloverse. How about letting us really show what our vision is without the shackles of canon weighing us down so much. Asking us to follow canon is one thing...restricting us to said canon is another.
