In Response To: Re: Visualizing the Halo Universe: Round 5 (TDSpiral) This is, first of all, really damn cool. I've always thought the idea of having a fully-armored Master Chief riding the Blind Wolves was really dumb, and made very little sense fictionally speaking. But when you remove the armor, throw on a saddle, and make it an alien instead of a human, it just seems to work. The first thing that struck me about the design was that you kept those weird lobes on the side of the Forerunner's head where a human's ears would be. For whatever reason, it had stuck in my head that those were a result of the Didact's most recent mutation. But checking the terminals again, I see that he had them from the beginning. And all the other Forerunners we see have that portion of their head obscured by armor, so they may very well have them too. So at first it threw me off, but now I think it's actually a nice touch that helps to distinguish the Forerunners from the humans. From a fictional standpoint, given that the Didact has undergone more than a few mutations in his 10,000 years, this vision of a 'base' Forerunner looks far too similar to the elite Promethean commander. The facial hair was a great touch, and I think it helps to give this guy a lot of character, but my idea of a Manipular (of whatever age) would be FAR more human in appearance. I would have removed the lobes on the head and made the hair a BIT more human-like. The flattened nose was is a natural feature for the Forerunners in my head. Basically, even given the changes that 343 has made, an unmanipulated Forerunner looks far more human in my head. My understanding from the Forerunner trilogy was that the base Forerunners were about as close to Bungie's vision of the Forerunners as 343 was going to get, and that it was only with their artificial mutations that their appearance veered away from the 'Bungie' Forerunners. But that both work in the same fiction, without having to have any sort of separation. This guy's clothing is also awesome. Yeah, it look a bit Turian (I have a feeling Mass Effect creeps into a lot of your designs unintentionally), but the robes almost make me think of the Prophets, which is again kind of a cool connection. Perhaps the Prophets designs their clothing off of some form of Forerunner garb, in order to make themselves feel closer to the gods. Now what would have been really cool, in addition to this, would be to design a Forerunner that HAD mutated in order to better suit his societal role as a... Blind Wolf rider, or whatever. Larger legs for clinging to whatever they're riding without stirrups, perhaps even without a saddle. Special organs on their arms to help communicate with the creature they're riding through the use of touch, and altered sensory organs to keep the Forerunners aware of the same things that their mount will be aware of. Just to propose a few ideas. What was the phrase everyone uses? 'Headcanon'?
