(Silent Knight) : The Prophets should have remained in the shadows, but instead the opening : seconds of Halo 2 showed them to be cardboard cut-out politicians. I'd say that truth was promising in h2. He had potential but that was squandered in halo 3. And so did the Arbiter. We saw that many people were quite willing to overlook what he had done and were very willing to make excuses for his actions. The religious get-out-of-jail-card was particularly chilling. Bungie could have gone with this and had the Arbiter act as someone who was quite comfortable with killing an entire people could act. Truth could have intended to bring his people to the Ark and activate the rings with the intent of repopulating the galaxy using his own people and Forerunner tech. The Arbiter could have turned on the Prophet civilian ships. Maybe he could have betrayed John after the Array was deactivated and left him to the Gravemind. This would have been a salutory lesson to all those who made excuses for him. And would have been unexpected seeing as such a large number of stories go for the formulaic redemption story line. Its a Greek philosophy that people do bad things because they don't know any better. The Jewish/old testament philosophy is that people willingly and knowingly do bad things because people are innately sinful. I think that the Halo story was more old than new testament in tone. : I could have done without all the "insight" into the Covenant. I
We got our major insight from a book CH. h2 gave us a split in the Covenant. The Heretic could have given us that. And the Elites would have actively rejected the Prophets' lies. I would have had more sympathy for Elites as a result. Instead they were just rogues who had been turned on by their former allies. They had to find allies where they could. They had no problems killing our race: look how they bleated when their partners in crime did it to them. And they acted so surprised! Prophets: "Elites, we want you to kill the Humans and we wont really tell you why." Elites: "We don't really care, we'll do it for kicks." Brutes: "Elites! The Prophets have ordered us to kill you!" Elites: "Those Prophet bitches! How could they?!? Why... we're almost lost for words." I still smile when I hear them whine in game. I think the Bible has some thing to say about living by the sword and about reaping what you sow. :-)
