I think you're overreacting to other people's supposed overreactions. While I do find the inconsistencies between the game's arsenals annoying, I don't consider whole games non-canonical because the weapons are different from previous portrayals. However, for you to state "nothing should be considered canon," which is the polar opposite of "they changed some minor thing, so the whole game isn't canon," is just as wrong of a stance to take. If there are blantant, major story retcons, that just smacks of bad or lazy writing. We can gloss over minor details like weapons, but when multiple, major story elements — dates, events, character portrayals — don't match up, then something is wrong. While demanding 100% complete consistency down to the smallest details is going a bit overboard, so is simply excusing even the most gross violations of continuity just because you got pissed at someone else's complaints.
