One of my favourite authours, Lois McMaster Bujold, phrased it thusly; "The authour reserves the right to have a better idea." She'd keep close to her story canon in series, but if past canonical interpretations got in the way of making the next story better she'd jettison the interpretation instead of the next story.

I suspect Bungie's doing the same thing with the Halo series.

-- Steve is willing to grant these changes leeway if they do indeed lead to better games. Obsessive adherence to past expectations shouldn't win out over making a good product now.
