Really, i think gameplay and canon are two completely separate things. It's naïve to think that just because you can't board vehicles in H1 the Chief couldn't do it yet. The changes are made just for the purpose of making the gameplay more enjoyable.

Same for ODST. I don't seriously think the ODSTs can run faster while donning heavy turrets or jump that high, but it makes the game more enjoyable and that's most important. And while i'm usually nitpicky with every other aspect of the canon, i couldn't care less about gameplay changes as they obviously are separate from the canon.
