I think what bugged me about rescuing Cortana was the absurdity/characterization error of putting even the slightest implication of sex/romance into the MC and Cortana's relationship. I mean, the MC's sex drive was mostly removed by the operations he went through as a kid, and Cortana's an artificial intelligence. Their dynamic in H1 and H2 is that of a pair of friends - one's the grunt and one's the intel officer, but the relationship is casual and friendly, not formal and rigid. The exception to this dynamic in the first two games is "Don't make a girl a promise if you know you can't keep it", which should probably have just been "Don't make a promise if you know you can't keep it," if they weren't trying to add some hint of romance. Why they decided to introduce the subtle element of romance/sex, I'm not quite sure. Might've been just trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, I guess, but it's unlikely that a busty Cortana's going to get anyone's attention, given how women in games are usually portrayed (another plus for Mirror's Edge - Faith's design is actually realistic for a highly athletic woman in her twenties). Another possibility is that they were trying to introduce the rape undertones that Jilly picked up on. I hadn't seen in it quite those terms when I played the mission, but I can certainly see the argument. When you first find her, she looks like she's been physically abused, is lying on the ground in the fetal position, and her redesign does hint at sex quite a bit compared to the first two games. She also sounds a *wreck*, like someone's been doing terrible things to her. In fact, I'm starting to be convinced they were trying to hint at this. Maybe not, but I'm not as skeptical as I was ten minutes ago. Re-watch that cutscene in the library, and it does just sorta feel like that. -Nate
