In Response To: lol feminism (Cody Miller) Hands up in surrender, I am someone who likes to analyse media for themes. It doesn't matter if it's intentional or not, I really enjoy seeing what writers portray. I've previously been quite positive about Bungie in the context of the gaming industry. There are problems with Bungie games. Halo 3 is very tainted for me because of the Cortana storyline. I find it very uncomfortable to play, I associate Cortana's experience with rape. If you don't, then I'm glad that you're mind's more positively set than I am, but when I see a male character in a position of power over a female, causing her pain and emotional distress, I worry about the next step being rape. Maybe that says more about me than the game's creators - that's what this kind of analysis is all about. Getting away from rape, because it is so controversial and emotional, let's talk about Dare. I agree with you, lots of the issues stem from her being ONI rather than a woman. The love story is an excess of society in general, not Bungie's fault for including it. Sadie, although irritating, is a very redeemable character too. I still think Bungie does quite well. But I think Bungie does quite well in an industry fueled by young men, many of whom don't socialise with women to the extent that they would consider a 'normal' socialisation. The whole games industry treats women either as disposable pleasures or as unattainable bitches. Complaining because someone has the nerve to suggest there may be problems with this attitude (And how dare they use your pet game to try and get some hits) just goes to show we're not nearly thinking about this enough.
