In Response To: Re: Dude (slothboy) : Cortana stayed behind at great personal risk to secure a final solution in : case the ring could not be deactivated. Self sacrifice is the ultimate : heroic end. Oh yeah. And what was that final solution again? Funny, nobody ever tells us. Think she was bluffing? : Halsey may be a bitch but where is it written that all characters have to be
It's not written anywhere. However, it is awfully common that when people try to write strong female characters, what they end up with is bitchy. It is arguable whether that is because most audiences perceive strong females as being bitchy, or because the only way many writers know how to express "strong" together with "female" ends up looking to them like "bitchy". : Keyes showed up to RESCUE A MAN, again understanding that the prophet had to
Yes and no. She negated her efforts by hesitating, when it really wasn't necessary. However I'd say her failure is less personal than it is a symbol for the way the Chief and humanity have gone about addressing the Flood and Covenant problems since the first game-- first rescue your friends, then deal with the threat to humanity in particular and the galaxy in general. Even when the best solution is to cut right to the chase. If Keyes had managed to take out Truth and Johnson with the Pelican the problem is solved, at least as far as humanity and the galaxy are concerned (or at least until Gravemind pops up again). But instead she risks not only herself but her entire species in order to attempt to save one individual-- and so ends up failing to achieve anything. Of course the Chief conveniently escapes this trap for two reasons: one, his rescue of Cortana is more necessary than Keyes' rescue of Johnson (after all, he needs the Index to fire 04a, whereas all Keyes really needed to do to foil Truth was to kill him and/or Johnson, as well as herself if necessary) and the Chief of course succeeds where Keyes fails. The original article might be a bit over the top (as a lot of ideological tracts are, regardless of perspective) but it's not that far off the mark. Whatever else Bungie may have been able to do with its storytelling, breaking out of some of the conventions that limit the kinds of roles that are acceptable for women within action/science fiction scenarios isn't really one of them. Taylor's vocal performance as Cortana I think maintained a pretty high level throughout the series. I think the oversexualization of her visual presentation was sort of childish, unnecessary, and did little to promote the "Halo as love story" interpretation. Of all her visual incarnations I still prefer the one from Halo 1, and I think it fits her personality better. Some of the story elements that would have fleshed her out more fully in a non-visual way were either abandoned after the first game or relegated to the novels. Cortana as a character powerful enough to be a threat to the player, if she should so choose, really only exists in the first game. After that, Bungie abandoned it (as they largely abandoned Rampancy). The effect of Gravemind on Cortana, which could have been menacing and frightening, instead was used in a rather traditional damsel-in-distress way. I think it was well-executed, but you certainly can't call it feminist, and in many ways is less interesting than what Bungie could have done. I think it ended up being far more traditional than it might have been if it wasn't the flagship title on the console venture of one of the world's largest and most paranoid companies.
