Re: lol equality for all

In Response To: lol equality for all (Jillybean)

: But I think Bungie does quite well in an industry fueled by young men, many
: of whom don't socialise with women to the extent that they would consider
: a 'normal' socialisation.

: The whole games industry treats women either as
: disposable pleasures or as unattainable bitches.

sadly, this is what women are to the ostracized NEETs and general nerdy-outcast types that the gaming industry caters to (not exclusively, of course, but it's big). young men of this sort are looking for a brand of escapism that best mitigates the depression of their social awkwardness - and that probably involves subversive female characters. although this phenomenon is much more pronounced in the film/comics/anime industries, it's definitely present in the video game industry as well (since they're joined at the hip currently).

i think it would be very interesting to look at the depictions of men in media targeted toward women. Just look at Mr. Darcy as an archetypal example: how the shit are any of us supposed to live up to that? is it not equally problematic that apparently all men are supposed to be neigh emotionless sponges, only expressing anything when a woman needs to be comforted or attended to? are all men to politely stand idle and instantly become submissive and sheepish (out of love, presumably) when a woman berates them? are men to be large chunks of (extremely handsome) flesh, ready to "defend her honor" and "protect the damsel in distress"? oh and he's rich too. that's super important.

funny, how the man so desired by female audiences so perfectly complements all the "horrible stereotypes" thrown into female characters that young men fawn over.

basically i'm saying this: depictions of stereotypical men and women are probably more a result of our instinctual need to fill some sort of societal role than a result of malignant sexism. while i understand that such depictions ARE problematic, i think it's important to separate the problem from the blame (which i believe there is little to dispense, not that i'm accusing you of implying otherwise).
