In Response To: Re: Halo 3 campaign and the Arbiter. Concerns (Rockslider)
: I see that we're speculating a bit, but heck I'll join in...
: Personally I'd be quite worried if we have to fight alongside the Arbiter for
: a lot of the campaign. I'd have much the same concerns as you, that it
: would interfere with my ability to tackle things just how I like and at my
: own pace. It could really reduce the number of ways of having fun with the
: enemy. I'm also in agreement that "part of the charm and fun of
: playing Halo is facing the enemies alone". I really get into the lone
: soldier thing (been doing a lot of AOTCR lately - a great level for that).
: The atmosphere would be quite different if you had an AI partner tagging
: along. Could be nice as a sort of simulated co-op mode, but for the main
: business I'd rather be in complete and solitary control.
I agree. You said it far better then I did.
: Plus I'm a bit of a stickler for the "covies = enemy" ethic, so I
: don't go for the idea of fighting alongside ANY covies, let alone the
: Arbiter who I didn't like in H2 (partly because I always saw Elites as
: being a lot more animalistic and growly than the human-like depiction we
: got in H2, and partly because I was only interested in playing as MC
: anyway). If we DO link up with him, my first instinct would undoubtedly be
: to kill him on the spot. That would probably be my second and third
: instincts too, come to think of it. However, if he's programmed to be a
: central character then I doubt you'd be ABLE to kill him - or at least not
: without failing the mission. So I hope that at least we'd have some option
: to minimize any such covie assistance.
"If we DO link up with him, my first instinct would undoubtedly be to kill him on the spot. That would probably be my second and third instincts too, come to think of it"
That struck me so funny. When I first played Halo 2 and you go back and forth between the Chief and the Arbiter, it threw me for a loop. It was unexpected for me as the player to switch between both characters.
: In a later post you queried whether it's really "single player"
: when you have an AI team mate battling beside you. Well, Marines in H1
: were a lot of fun alongside you, but those guys were so weak that in
: practice they usually had little actual combat value, except for the guys
: with sniper rifles. As such, they gave you good company and atmosphere but
: not at the expense of taking over your covie-slaying duties. The battling
: was mainly up to you, and as such, it was still very much a 'single
: player' feel. With the Arbiter though, I imagine he'd be programmed as a
: pretty tough fighter; maybe not as effective as you, but way more
: effective than Marines. So maybe it would feel more like co-op.
Sorry, I guess that was a little nit-pick. Maybe I'm just being selfish, not wanting to share my Halo 3
battles. hehehe.
