If : the station was to be detachable, then it'd have to lift from the ground : end and haul the whole tether up to avoid giving the planet a lick of the : lash. (Arr...) Your hypothesis contradicts the visible results of the tether being destroyed, because if the tether seperated at ground level only, then we would not see the tether debris in the manner presented in the trailer. So either a) you are correct and Bungie failed to do their homework, or b)something else happened. Id like to point out, in case someone tries to argue it, that even if the blast propelled pieces of the tether away, i doubt they would land in the way we see them in the announce. : I should also point out that the counterweight originally considered in : "beanstalk" (as it was termed at the time) design was an : asteroid. We're not talking sinker weights here, but literally : astronomical masses. Hmm... Phobos'd be about right. *grin* In those : designs, the real functioning heart of the station was at geostationary : orbit (36,000km). If Cairo has internal gravity systems Im sure simulating exta mass for a tether off a moderately sized space station is no problem. : Of course, this obviously isn't the case for Halo 2's MAC platforms; hmm... : now I'm thinking we need to know how far up those platforms are. Man, now : I've gotta get the calipers out and take a stroll outside the Cairo to : do some good ol' trig... : -- Steve'll have to put the "geo" back in "geometry".
