Why would it fall east? Why not west? Isn't the Earth spinning towards the east? If you look down on the North Pole the Earth would be spinning counter-clockwise. The way I see it is an object anchored in geo-synchronous orbit would have to speed up in relation to the earth to fall east. If the elevator broke apart the pieces would be travelling at the same RPM as the earth. These pieces would be travelling towards the east but would soon lose thier momentum and the Earth would spin underneath them and they would actually land to the west of thier anchor point. If it is in fact different please explain why so I can understand. | |
