In Response To: Re: Wouldn't it really fall west? (Anton P. Nym (aka Steve))

: Most of the pieces won't lose their momentum, at least not as you mean it,
: because it's mostly outside our atmosphere.

Right. But we'll get maybe 30-60 miles (of the 22,000 miles) the tether back here on Earth. I'm assuming that it doesn't just break at the base but the whole thing fratures into pieces. We do see some in the game after all. And our goal is to use this information to locate where the artifact may be based on where we see the tether and the mountain etc.

: -- Steve's thinking is that the debris in the trailer is "cast off"
: from the tether's whip-lash; chunks of the ground-side stabilisation rings
: thrown there in reaction to the tether's sudden move eastward.

They way I see it the tether only appears to make an eastward move. But it wont have a great relative movement at all. It is in fact moving at the same RPM as the Earth. In fact I am guessing that the rotation of the Earth won't have much affect on the fragments that are in our atmosphere. I wish the MIT page would have shown the relative rotation of the Earth.

It's going to take more than an hour and a half for those fragments that are 30 miles up to reach the ground. (If my calculation is correct.) So the landing position will be affected by prevailing winds than by Earth's rotation.

If I had a guess I'd say most of the debris will land west on the continent rather than east into the ocean. It's really difficult to say where without knowing the wind speeds, wind direction, and the effect this has on the tether debris.
