In Response To: Re: Check this out (KnightPremier)

: Nice find on the animations! However, I think the example we should look at
: are that of the elevator breaking around 3/4 the way up or even at the
: counter-weight.

The explosion was at ground level, plus a few kilometers altitude. That's not going to cut the tether 40,000 or 60,000 kilometers away... that's going to cut it at ground level. Yes, there'd be local splintering and shattering, but if it could propagate that far up the tether I doubt even the most desperate UNSC staffers would've approved their construction.

: The reason I'd say this is that the 'counter-weight' isnt
: going to be just a huge block of depleted uranium, its going to be a
: spacestation. The station could be designed to sever itself from the
: tether if there were ever any signs of trouble, so that it could manuver
: itself into a chosen orbit without the forces of the free tether acting
: upon it.

Unlikely, as without the counterweight the tether will collapse and wind itself around the Earth; see the animation for that at the linked page. If the station was to be detachable, then it'd have to lift from the ground end and haul the whole tether up to avoid giving the planet a lick of the lash. (Arr...)

I should also point out that the counterweight originally considered in "beanstalk" (as it was termed at the time) design was an asteroid. We're not talking sinker weights here, but literally astronomical masses. Hmm... Phobos'd be about right. *grin* In those designs, the real functioning heart of the station was at geostationary orbit (36,000km).

Of course, this obviously isn't the case for Halo 2's MAC platforms; hmm... now I'm thinking we need to know how far up those platforms are. Man, now I've gotta get the calipers out and take a stroll outside the Cairo to do some good ol' trig...

-- Steve'll have to put the "geo" back in "geometry".
