In Response To: Re: The state of the community. (stan) I hate to throw in my two cents this far down in a thread especially when I'm an unknown on these forums. Oh well, that's how it goes. I must admit that I've been a faithful lurker in the Halo community for the better part of three years, and I've seen a lot change in that time period. Offline, however, I have been able to recruit between 10 and 20 other players in my area, and convince them to buy Xboxes and copies of Halo (and now Halo 2). This brings me to my online participation. Not to toot my own horn, but I was an XBL beta tester, and one of the first registrants on the xbox.com forums. This is where my experience becomes relevant. Anyone else who was around during the beta period on the xbox.com forums knows how productive and engaging that community was. After the worldwide release of XBL, there was quite a surge of new users and new problems to deal with. Our community rapidly deteriorated from "My voice seems to be intermittent on XBL" or "Suggested improvements to the friends system" into "who is teh uberhottest kasumi or ayane?????!!!1!" and "i pwned a n00b 20 times in a row in mechassault! haha losers" I seriously doubt if I made a post there after January or February of 2003, mainly because of the childish and often obscene nature of the forums.
Similarly, the Halo modding community began to sour after the release of the HEK, when every other thread was about what color someone's "new" warthog was, or how they had put on some "bling rims." Luckily, the real talent in that community won out over much of the idiocy, and we saw fantastic new ideas come to fruition.
As long as I can remember HBO has been the place for the best and the brightest to come and share their thoughts and ideas. It has been a place where flame wars and spam are not tolerated, and a good place for the inexperienced to gain some knowledge without feeling ashamed of themselves.
I really want HBO to maintain a feeling of intelligence and civilization amidst the obnoxious babbling that is 90% of the other game communities. Anything that can be done, should be. The MPRRS is a great example of what can and should be implemented.
This isn't exactly how I expected to de-lurk myself, but after that rant I think I'm here to stay, and stay visibly. So let's prevent this community of communities from going the way of so many others.
