Hmmmm... this has some interesting implications for other aspects of the story, as well. We all know that Cortana is not the same after interfacing directly with the Control Room computer. In the Maw, she seems to lie to Foe Hammer; in the end cutscene, she seems to stammer a little when she's explaining her (their) actions to destroy Halo. Here's the rub: what if Cortana is in fact the Second Betrayal™? In Two Betrayals, when she's talking about the pulse reactors and finding the Autumn, she says she has to use the Covenant battlenet to find the crash site, so they need to buy some time. But, rather obviously, Guilty Spark is able to find the Autumn just fine. Does he tap the Covenant transmissions also, or does he perhaps know from the computer systems of Halo itself? If the latter, why wasn't Cortana privy to this information? What if she knew the pulse generators to be related to Guilty Spark's power supply and therefore wanted to hurt him before moving on to the Autumn to destroy Halo. She just seems a bit off after the Control Room encounter, so maybe we're witnessing the early stages of Cortana's rampancy, as exemplified by her contradictory statements ("I can't even begin to calculate the pulse's range") and flat-out lies (To Foe Hammer: "We have a wildcat destabilization of the ship's fusion core. The engines must have sustained more damage than we thought!" Well, duh!). So there you go. Some of my thoughts on the subject. |
