Hahaha! Oh man. I completely forgot about that. Here's a choice quote, " half of the sun had gone nova, but the readings from the other half were impossible. It was as if the universe had forgotten its own rules. " Kind of reminds me of the story in Marathon: it feels like half of it had forgotten its own rules.
In general, I think this is Double Aught just playing around with the "what if" possibilities of the Marathon universe.
If we need some kind of hard explanation for what happens in that story, this would be my guess. For whatever reason, in this reality Tfear and the Pfhor seem to have a much clearer understanding of what Durandal is capable of. In the games they clearly underestimate him, but in the manual's story they recognize how powerful he is. So, Tfear decides that Durandal is too tricky and ephemeral to kill in the regular old fashioned way. They need to cripple him and then kill him with a nova to make absolutely certain that he's dead, along with any S'pht that have been influenced by him. As for how Durandal knows about the W'rkncacnter? It would seem in this reality that the information is located on the Aye Mak Sicur station.
Ultimately, I just think this is a "what if" story.
