I believe it sets the scene for what is about to come. Multiple failed timelines. I also like to think that by the time we get to end of Ne Cede Malis we realise that going with Durandal at the end M1 is not leading to a successful timeline conclusion. After all this as been the 3rd failed attempt (that we are aware of). Hence the switch at the start of Robot Rise Robot. Try another path.

It also infers that we had a choice at the end of M1. To stay on the Marathon or go with Durandal. And not as we all assumed (up to now) that we had no choice.
