I think assuming time travel is "instantaneous" is applying a time constraint to something that breaks the constraints of time.

: what "diegetic" means. Something can be non-diegetic and still
: mandatory, still part of the story, etc. Non-diegetic just means that it
: is something the audience experiences and that the characters do not. In a
: book for example, a third person narrator is a mandatory, non-diegetic
: part of the storytelling; it communicates plot, but it is not a part of
: the plot itself. So, something being "not optional" to progress
: in the story does not exclude it from being non-diegetic.

But if it's a dream (as the name "electric sheep" implies), he is experiencing it.
