: Maybe this bit is rhetorical and I'm about to be punished for engaging with
: it at face value, but, well. They're dream levels . That's what I think
: he's experiencing. (I would touch on what I think he's dreaming about, but
: I know that anything I have to say here would get shot down.)

: If they look like "Jjaro lava facilities", that's probably more a
: consequence of not having room for a sixth texture set or something.
: In-universe, that and the grey Enforcers and S'pht could be chalked up to
: "showing up in the SO's dreams because the present circumstances
: basically force him to think about them a lot" (it's happened to me
: more than a few times).

So, you think that between timelines that the main character is literally dreaming?

I mean, the main character leaves one timeline and enters another. I think that's an instantaneous process. So, what do you think is literally happening in between those two moments. Where and when is the main character? Do you actually think he's asleep? Where is he sleeping?

: That's not what I was trying to say; what that was, is that I think these
: levels were intended to be seen as diagetic because they aren't optional
: to progress in the story.

This is extremely broken logic, and I think you don't actually understand what "diegetic" means. Something can be non-diegetic and still mandatory, still part of the story, etc. Non-diegetic just means that it is something the audience experiences and that the characters do not. In a book for example, a third person narrator is a mandatory, non-diegetic part of the storytelling; it communicates plot, but it is not a part of the plot itself. So, something being "not optional" to progress in the story does not exclude it from being non-diegetic.

: "To keep the experimental narrative cohesive", is the simplest way
: I know to put it. And no, I don't really like this idea, but that's
: because I don't find "these parts of the game aren't canon" to
: be a satisfying solution, not 'cuz "it's unusual".

There's two things wrong with this. 1) The narrative already isn't cohesive. 2) It's pretty arbitrary to think that in an experimental narrative like this that the authors wouldn't also be interested in experimenting with the cohesiveness of that story.

I gave the example of Mullins' art for a reason. What you are doing is equivalent of trying to come up with a cohesive canon for the Mullins art, when the very motivation behind the art makes it impossible to do so.
