The closest we have today is the plasma window. Basicaly, it is a very small screen of plasma that is currently used to separate the outside environment from a vacuum. Information.

I believe an energy shield would use plasma sandwiched between magnetic fields. The entire suit of a spartan would be used to generate the field. The plasma would absorb plasma based weapons some what and vaporize solid projectiles. The magnetic field would deflect, absorb, scatter plasma. The magnetic field strength would decrease with the amount of dammage incurred. The shield would then need to be re-magnetized. The slippery effect mentioned by other posters would be caused by a slight diamagnetic effect.

One notices that the shield follows the contours of the sparta body. A shield generated by the armor could create a shape like this. Also noticable is what the shield looks like when objects impact it. For the answer to that,I give you a picture of a plasma ball:

The plasma ball could hint at what causes the visible discharge of a shield when a high speed object or plasma collides with the shield.
