The chief has a built in radar system and computer. No need for a magnetic "trip-wire" field to create the vacuum.

Plasma is already vaporized. And ionized. It is electrically charged, which means it reacts to magnetic fields. If you have a strong enough magnetic field on the right frequency, you could deflect a beam of plasma.

A perfect vacuum is impossible. In addition, I don't understand your vacuum idea or your balloon explanation for slipperyness. COuld you explain it step by step for a bullet and a hand entering a magnetic field.

The magnetic field of an object will loose strength if you heat it or rapidly accelerate and decelerate it (ie: hitting it agianst a table) or in the presence of another magnetic field. If you were to recharge a magnetic field based energy shield, it would take time to remagnetize the field.

Finally, there is a form of magnetism called diamagnetism. They have used this interesting magnetic phenomenan to cause frogs to float. It acts not on the macroscopic scale of matter and atoms, but on the electons in atoms. It requires an external magnetic field. It affects water, gold, mercury, bismuth, and most organic compounds. A form called paramagnetism exists too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramagnetism
