This is where it gets into the realm of "it's sci-fi tech from a highly advanced race". It might take advantage of physical laws we're not aware of, use forms of energy (or non-energy) that we don't know about yet or don't now how to manipulate. It's never been even vaguely explained anywhere I've seen, and this thread has been pretty much speculation.

For all we know, it warps space-time around the shielded person so fast-moving objects and plasma are (maybe even selectively!) repelled by a localized sort of anti-gravity. Or maybe they just end up having to travel a much, much longer distance when they attempt to cross the shield barrier. I'm not a physicist, just an afficionado of science and hard science fiction.
