In Response To: Re: Energy shield questions (Xaos)

: The magnetic field of an object will loose strength if you heat it or rapidly
: accelerate and decelerate it (ie: hitting it agianst a table) or in the
: presence of another magnetic field. If you were to recharge a magnetic
: field based energy shield, it would take time to remagnetize the field.

: Finally, there is a form of magnetism called diamagnetism. They have used
: this interesting magnetic phenomenan to cause frogs to float. It acts not
: on the macroscopic scale of matter and atoms, but on the electons in
: atoms. It requires an external magnetic field. It affects water, gold,
: mercury, bismuth, and most organic compounds. Diamagnetism:

: A form called paramagnetism exists too:

Yeah, magnetism isn't something I understand particularly well, I guess. I hearby rescind my stance against Halo's shields being magnetic. I just think that would complicate things more than it needs to (given the various kinds of magnetism, depending on permeability, susceptability, etc), but it's possible. Especially with advance, sci-fi tech.

Thanks, Xaos, for posting that. I had wondered how aluminum could be used in magnetically-driven mass drivers before, but never understood the concept of diamagnetism before.
