I always thought it was a hugely powerful electromagnet. that would stop bullets cause there metal, and plasma cause its affected by magnitism. and the reason it doesn't cause metal things to fly at you and get stuck, or vise versa, fly away from you, is because its actully two layers, in perfect balance. and when a bullet or plasma hits it, it weakeans one of the layers, causeing and imballance, sending out a microburst of magnetic energy, thereby stoping said bullet, or plasma.

anyway, purely speculation.

oh, and magic is always a good theroy.
