In Response To: Re: Energy shield questions (TelTura)

Naw, can't be magnetism. Lead isn't magnetic. Neither is tungsten. Nor are the fuel rod projectiles used by Hunters, the splash damage from explosions, fire (that eats at the shield whenever you get too close to it), or the projectiles that the Covenant Carbine uses (well, fine, that's speculation).

And as for the vaporization idea, that seems shaky, because the novels describe the shields as making the ground and objects the MC grabs as feeling somewhat slippery because of the shields. The shield is repelling them, not vaporizing them (it'd be awful annoying if the shield were vaporizing the ground under you). Again, a shield that vaporizes doesn't account for things like splash damage (the concussive wave portion of it, apart from shrapnel), or how it protects from fall damage.

: that makes sense (kinda) for bullets and plasma, but what about impact? a
: rock gets thrown at you, whoops, magnets aren't helping....introducing:
: Flatster Chief.

: I always imagined that magnetism was used to keep an electric field around
: the suit that served no greater purpose than to act as a sort of burglar
: alarm...once the field is penetrated, it creates a
: vaccume...vacoom...vacuom...thing, of sorts, causing a sudden,
: speed-of-light overcompensation of energy from the suit's capacitors (no
: way there's only one), which doesn't deflect the penetrator, but rather
: attempts to vaporize it. now, this costs much less energy to do for
: small items (e.g. AR rounds) than for large ones (knives, sniper rounds,
: etc), which explains why it takes a whole clip of halo 1 AR rounds,
: sometimes, to break through someone's shields, where usually only one or
: two sniper rounds will do the trick. also, because of the massive amount
: of shards from a shotgun round, the shield is overloaded almost instantly.

: now, as for plasma, I imagine it's the same thing, only because the plasma
: itself is held together in a magnetic field, it disrupts more of the
: suit's field than it's size would suggest, resulting in a more massive
: depletion of the suit's capacitors.

: now, as for why it takes a moment for the shields to start recharging, that
: behavior (like the game mechanic) is likely preprogrammed...the designers
: likely found that if the suit was constantly recharging against, say, an
: AR being pumped into it, the system overheated, the capacitors melted, or
: the fusion core went meltdown.

: I'm sure that's not a wanted behavior on the field...
