In Response To: Re: DVD Consortium Charges (Louis Wu) : Are you being intentionally obtuse, or did you really miss his point? No, I'm not being obtuse, I'm just using the rules of English grammar to parse your sentence, and it doesn't necessarily say what you intended: : Licensing. The cost of the ability to play DVDs out-of-the-box (as levied by
... can be interpreted to mean that the initial cost for DVD playback licensing is $300, and that there is an extra fee for "out of the box" (IE, a separate licensing class for devices that can play DVDs without an external dongle, meaning by "out of the box" and those that require a dongle). If it had said "added on to the price of the Xbox" it would have been clearer, that's all. : The $300 was the COST OF THE XBOX - hard drive, controller, all the
: Now $200 - so the $x levied by the DVD consortium per box is MORE relevant. If by "more relevant" you mean "a higher percentage of total consumer price". As the price itself goes lower, the barrier to the consumer paying the fee themselves may become less important. I don't know what the fee itself is, and AFAIK it hasn't been mentioned in the thread; however, I'd speculate it is less (perhaps significantly less) than $30, since MS would most likely want to recover that charge, plus the cost of the dongle and the remote, plus packaging and distribution for the separate product, plus some margin in the cost of the DVD kit. But if that's the case it tends to look less like they didn't want to eat the cost of the DVD consortium fee, but more like they felt many people would want DVD playback and be willing to pay for it, and that MS would make more margin on the kit from a subset of all purchasers than they would get more Xbox sales by putting capability right in the box, and on that count, they may be right. I haven't seen any sales figures just on the DVD kit to make a guess. |
